Congratulations to all the shows that won Tony awards last night!
Of course we don’t have the shows themselves here at the Field Library, but we can do the next best thing: we can give you access to the music (for the musical) and the books on which the winners were based (for the Best Musical and the Best Play).
Let’s start with the winner of the Best Musical, Fun Home, which also won for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Actor in a Musical (Michael Cerveris). We have the soundtrack (which is terrific, by the way), and we have the graphic novel, Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel, on which the show is based. Listen and read before you go to the show!
The winner of Best Play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, (which also won for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play and a couple of technical awards) is also based on a book in our library, by Mark Haddon. The book is a fascinating mystery as seen through the eyes of a high-functioning autistic boy. It’s well worth a read (or a reread if you’re one of the many people who read it when it first came out in 2003).
So if you want to get a glimpse of what all the fuss is about, come down to the library and check out the sources!
